Baby Boomer Boom Time
What does it mean to be a Baby Boomer in the first 20 years of the 21st century? They are certainly one of the largest generational demographics. World war 2 was over – the euphoria of peace saw young families get out there and procreate, and they did! The Baby Boomer generation had arrived.
If you were born into an advanced western country you’ve had a good run so far. No major international wars, plenty of food, good health facilities, being a young teen in the swinging sixties, and you were pretty much guaranteed a job when you left school.
So where are they all now? The early Baby Boomers are already retired, and for the rest of them it is fast approaching. There is a perception out there that most Boomers are cashed up and spending the kids inheritance to travel around the world enjoying their golden years.
Reality check – the Global Financial Crises (GFC) happened 2007/8 and being a Boomer was not so good after all. Pension funds were hit with big devlauations, and retirees or those about to retire were facing the possibility of having to stay in work, or worse having to get back into the work force. The scary part for Boomers who were affected by the GFC was not having enough time to make up the losses in their pension funds before they retired and had to start drawing on the funds.
What’s that saying the new 50 is 30 does that mean the new 60 is 40!!! Boomers are not a generation that is going to slide quietly into their dotage. They are young at heart and want to make the rest of their lives fun and exciting.
Well, the commercial world out there is certainly pandering to their needs and wants. Luxury retirement villages for over 50’s, package holiday deals, dating websites for “mature adults” yoga classes, and personal training.
Everyone is cashing in on the over 50’s demographic, and why not!!
